The Displays of the American Green-winged Teal

چکیده
T HE displays of the European race of the Green-winged Teal (Anas crecca crecca) have been studied intensively (Lorenz, 1953, 1958; Lorenz and von de Wall, 1960; von de Wall, 1963) b u no detailed description has been t published for the North American race (A. c. caroknensis) . Some displays of carolinensis have been described (e.g., Sutton, in Bent, 1923; Johnsgard, 1955), but in general it has been assumed that the behavior of the two races is identical (e.g., Phillips, 1923; Parkes, 1958). An inventory of carolinensis displays is presented here as a basis for intensive studies of pair-formation in this race now in progress. This account is based on observations of both wild and captive birds made at Delta, Manitoba between 1955 and 1963, and analysis of 800 feet of movie film. The Green-winged Teal has a highly developed “social courtship” (“Gesellschaftsspiel,” Heinroth, 1910) in which a number of males swim around a female giving display movements and whistling loudly. As Lorenz has described, many of the behavior patterns have homologues in the Mallard (Anus platyrhynchos) but all movements are faster. This paper deals primarily with the displays associated with social courtship and the process of pair-formation. In most cases I have used the names for displays coined by Lorenz.

Novel H5 Clade 2.3.4.4 Reassortant (H5N1) Virus from a Green-Winged Teal in Washington, USA
Eurasian (EA)-origin H5N8 clade 2.3.4.4 avian influenza viruses were first detected in North America during December 2014. Subsequent reassortment with North American (AM) low-pathogenic wild-bird-origin avian influenza has generated at least two reassortants, including an EA/AM H5N1 from an apparently healthy wild green-winged teal, suggesting continued ongoing reassortment.

An avian influenza virus strain, A/domestic green-winged teal/Hunan/3450/2006(H5N1) (DGW-T3450), was isolated from domestic green-winged teals. Genome analysis demonstrated that DGW-T3450 is a novel reassortant strain. The hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) genes of this strain originated from H5N1 viruses circulating in poultry, while its remaining genes are derived from multiple ancest...

An avian influenza virus strain, A/domestic green-winged teal/Hunan/2036/2007(H3N6) (DGW-T2036), was isolated from healthy domestic green-winged teals (Anas crecca) in Hunan Province, South China. All eight gene segments of the isolate were sequenced. Genomic analysis demonstrated that this H3N6 virus is a novel reassortant avian influenza virus with a gene constellation originating from multip...
متن کاملHabitat Selection and Activities of Dabbling Ducks during Non-Breeding Periods
Western Tennessee is an important region for waterfowl during non-breeding periods, supporting >40% of the Mississippi Flyway population of American black ducks (Anas rubripes). Understanding habitat selection and activities of waterfowl during the non-breeding period is important for directed habitat management on national wildlife refuges and in other wetlands important in meeting regional wa...
متن کاملEffectiveness of Spinning-Wing Decoys Varies Among Dabbling Duck Species and Locations
Spinning-wing decoys are strong attractants to ducks and increase kill rates over traditional decoying methods. However, it is unknown whether all duck species are attracted similarly to spinning-wing decoys and whether the effectiveness of these decoys changes with latitude. We examined the effectiveness of spinning-wing decoys for 9 species of dabbling ducks during 545 experimental hunts in C...
